Profile

Isaki Kasahara

I am a Japanese arborist based in Tokyo. My work is in the field: pruning and caring for garden trees, inspecting large and old trees — often by climbing into the crown on ropes — and measuring what is happening inside a trunk with diagnostic instruments.

The trees I work on range from small private gardens to temple and shrine grounds and city streets. Many of them are cared for with techniques that have been handed down in Japan for centuries and are rarely explained in English. I started this site to write them down from first-hand experience, and to share what the field reveals with gardeners and arborists abroad.

Before working with trees, I studied plant metabolic biochemistry. That training still shapes how I look at a tree: observe first, measure where it matters, and say only what the evidence supports.
